Description: Principles of strategic and systematic design, implementation and evaluation of instruction with emphasis on integration of technology.

FRE 490 - Topics in French: French Sociolinguistics

Instructor: Jane Smith

Description: A survey of the history of French and its development into a standard language. Greater emphasis will be given to studies of social variation, language attitudes and language policy in la francophonie. The course will briefly consider the use of regional languages in France.

Prerequisites: FRE 209 or FRE 310 or permission.

HED 630 - Higher Education and the Law

Instructor: Sue Estler

Description: A seminar focusing on the impact of the law and legal processes on institutions of higher education, including such areas as employment, (including equal opportunity/affirmative action, dismissal, contracts and tenure), academic freedom, civil rights, due process, student rights and other issues of concern to higher education leaders.

HED 650 - Social Context of Higher Education

Instructor: Elizabeth Allan

Description: Seminar providing in-depth exploration of the role of race, ethnicity, social class, gender, sexuality and other identity differences in shaping the contemporary social context of postsecondary education in the United States.

Prerequisites: Higher Education Leadership doctoral student or permission.

HED 676 - Doctoral Seminar in Higher Education

Instructor: Susan Gardner

Description: Examines major theoretical perspectives and related research in the organization and functioning of colleges and universities. Considers the leadership implications for higher educational organizations and programs.

MLC 466 - Teaching of Modern Languages

Instructor: Jane Smith

Description: Includes analysis of current trends and methods, application of language learning principles to classroom procedures, theory and practice of language methodologies at different learning levels, use of technologies such as video and computers in the instructional process. For students seeking certification in foreign language teaching.

How to Register for a Course

For further information on graduate courses listed above, contact the University of Maine Graduate School at 581-3219. Registration questions can be answered by Becky Libby.

If you are not enrolled in a degree program:
You will need to fill out a Graduate Non-degree form as well as a Course Registration form.

  1. Go to the UMaine Graduate School web site at www2.umaine.edu/graduate/.
  2. Click on the "Forms and Documents" link on the left.
  3. Scroll until you find the "Non-degree Application & Registration" link.
  4. Open the file (available in either PDF or Word format).
  5. Print and complete the two forms contained in the file.
  6. Submit both forms to the graduate school with a check covering the $25 non-degree application fee. You will be billed for the course at a later date.

If you are enrolled in a degree program:
