Success Stories:
Journalism Collaboration Established
Students in Rob Munzing's Broadcast Journalism
class at Gardiner Area High School are setting their sights
southward. But, rather than thinking of vacation spots, the students
in Broadcast Journalism are setting their sights on an innovative,
collaborative, news magazine television show with Bob Jones High
School in Madison, Alabama.
According to Rob Munzing, the collaboration began when he and Bob
Jones teacher, Brandy Vermillion, met as part of the Radio and
Television News Directors Association Teacher Ambassador program last
April.
"Brandy and I realized that our programs were very similar. Both of
us were committed to developing Broadcast Journalism programs to
allow students to develop meaningful stories that were important to
them. We recognized that by collaborating we would allow students to
explore regional differences."
Carol Knopes, Director of Education Projects for RTNDA, hopes that
this project will become a model for others nationwide and has
supported each school with a $5,000 grant to implement this program.
Another benefit of this collaboration, according to Munzing is the
concept of Global Learning.
Governor Baldacci has stated that Maine must do more to retain our
young people. To attain that goal, skills must be incorporated into
curriculum that teaches these skills. Munzing believes that this
project hits that mark.
"People clearly enjoy the quality of life here in Maine, we need
to teach each students skills that will allow them to develop a
global concept that will allow them to live in Maine and work
globally," Munzing states.
Students will conference with their peers in Alabama using the Video
Conference Center at GAHS. This Center is part of the State of Maine
Distance Learning Project and the connection between Gardiner and
Madison, Alabama will be the first time that the ATM System has been
used by a high school to connect with a school outside of Maine.
Students have prepared "Care Packages" that showcase their region
and will exchange these live over the ATM System on Thursday
February 16th at 9 am. "We had a lot of fun putting together these
items that represent our state. I hope they are ready for our state
soft drink, Moxie", says Munzing. Students will introduce
themselves and begin to discuss story ideas for their first
collaborative show.
Broadcast students from GAHS produce Eye of the Tiger that can be
seen Fridays on Adelphia Channel 9 at 9:30pm.
