Resources for Teaching via ATM: General rules of thumb
The following are rules to keep in mind while creating materials.
Test Materials
Don't rely on how well your presentations and other materials look on your computer.
View a dry run from both the front and back of the ATM room to make sure that it is readable on screen.
If it is impossible to get into the ATM room before the event ...
- use a 800 x 600 screen resolution and a color setting of 16-bit
- display the document / presentation / etc.
- stand ten feet away from your computer monitor

Spell Check
Spill chick and proofread evrything - twice!
Don't rely on the spell check to catch all your errors.
It will not catch incorrect word usage.

Wordiness
Make visuals really visual and don't rely on numbers and words.
Use charts, graphs, pictures and color.

Animations
Animations should be used conservatively as all types of motion can be rendered visually confusing once it is telecast to the television screen.

Document Camera
Pastel colored paper with darker colored fonts works best on the document camera.
You can use existing pages from books or handouts, but test them beforehand to ensure readability.

Using Web Pages
Most Internet sites are difficult
to read on the TV or overhead screen.
Things that can help ...
- use the scan converter's zoom feature
- adjust browser preferences
- summarize material in PowerPoint
- print web pages for reading

And finally ...
Test your materials before you go "live" to make sure that they read well, and that they convey the message you want to deliver.
